ENVIRONMENTAL BUSINESSES That Offer A Solution

PRAIRIE ORIGINALS

Prairie Originals has been around since 1990 and is located in St. Clement, Manitoba just north of Winnipeg.

This innovative and literally ‘grass-roots’ company, (pun intended lol), specializes in growing indigenous prairie wildflowers and grasses. When we choose to grow these amazing plants, not only are we creating a beautiful environmentally beneficial garden that is rewarding and easy to take care of and attracts all manner of birds and butterflies, but we are also restoring the natural ecosystems essential to the very survival of our native grasslands, which, unfortunately now are threatened by climate change, extensive monocultural farming and harmful pesticidal practices.

WILD BEE TREASURES

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BEES?

Bees are AMAZING little creatures!  We have taken them for granted for so long and NOW we are starting to panic as we realize just how important they really are (of course, when they are on the brink of extinction!)  I thought I knew a lot about bees – turns out not-so-much! . Let’s see how YOU do with this little quiz – a few basic True/False questions for you!

  1. The Honeybee is the main type of bee that pollinates all our food. True or false?

FALSE – There are over 20,000 different types of bees and the majority of these are wild bees. These are the ones we rely on for the vast majority of our food. These bees over-winter underground or in dry leaves and debris in your yard. That is why it is so important to wait a little in spring before you start cleaning up.

2. Pollinator hotels are great ways to help bees. True or false?

FALSE – Most of these, sadly become traps for bees as there are many inherent dangers;  1) in their construction – their fragile wings get torn on rough edges or burs in the wood, 2) the resin frequently used is toxic and 3) also because of their construction, more often than not these pollinator hotels become habitat for the actual predators of bees, and not the bees themselves. The alternative being the WILD BEE TREASURE which you can find at:

3. Without bees, we can basically say goodbye to much of our food system. True or false?

TRUE – Nearly 1/3 of all the food we eat comes to us directly as a result of bee pollination. Without bees, we would not have foods such as blueberries, apples, almonds, avocados and many kinds of squashes – foods that supply the majority of our vitamins, antioxidants and diverse nutrition.  Starches however, such as wheat, rice, corn, and oats are wind-pollinated. The likes of potatoes, cassava and bananas require no pollination and soy beans, lentils and peas are self-pollinating.

4. The female does most of the work in a beehive. True or False?

TRUE – They are also the ones with the stinger and it is true, if they sting they lose their stinger and die. The drones’ main function is to mate with the queen and do not have a stinger.

5. It’s ok for bees to drink from puddles or birdbaths. True or False?

FALSE – Actually puddles can contain harmful chemicals and birdbaths are too deep so they frequently drown. SOLUTION – Bee Watering Dish. Make your own (check out this video:)
